Owner Spotlight: Connie Pettigrew
I love being in business. I love helping my clients; listening to them, figuring out their needs and giving them the best advice possible.
I grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and then moved to Oxford where I attended Oxford Regional High. Afterward I studied Business Administration at Mount Saint Vincent, majoring in accounting and business management.
I really never aspired to be a business owner. It just evolved.
In my last job, I loved what I was doing, I just wasn’t satisfied with the working conditions. This experience influenced my leadership style; it caused me to better see who I was, and importantly, who I didn’t wish to be. When I started looking for something else, my family and friends suggested that I start my own business. With my husband’s support, and from others close to me - that’s just what I did. I’m so glad. Now, I still love what I do, and I love who I do it with!
Today I have many responsibilities. I am responsible for my employees; for what they do and how they do it. I am responsible to our clients. We make sure that they receive the best tax and business deductions available to them. In this way, I no longer have one boss; I have thousands.
No day at work is typical. They are all different. This is one reason why it’s all so exciting. I do spend a lot of time on the phone. I am helping my clients by finding solutions to their tax and financial issues. Tax season is intense. From January through to April I can be at the office for 16 hour days.
The top three skills I rely upon for success are: dedication, accuracy and confidentiality. I must make important decisions each and every day. I keep the business running smoothly. My employees rely upon me for the security of their jobs. And, in turn, I rely upon them. Their contributions are key to our success; without them I wouldn’t have the business I do. Our awesome clients have also been a huge factor in our success to-date. These elements all come together with plain old-fashioned hard work. It is so satisfying when I can see the sincere smile of somebody who I’ve helped.
I always admire other small business owners because I can appreciate the challenges they face.
Outside of working hours I enjoy spending time with family and friends. My favourite hobbies include rug hooking and riding my motorcycle. Nothing beats a pleasant back roads tour on a warm and sunny day!
Personally I really value integrity, honesty and trustworthiness. I think these are things count when measuring a person. I strive to embrace these qualities in my life.
I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting my community. I care about children’s charities and the Lillian Allbon Animal Shelter in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Their volunteers do amazing work for stray and neglected cats and dogs.
